As 2014 draws to a close, Words & Riddins is highlighting what reggae dancehall is all about – the MUSIC. Rich, powerful, artistic and creative music is what we love from reggae dancehall and this year has been no exception. This curated list of top dancehall songs 2014 and reggae anthems – highlights some of the biggest tunes from Jamaican music and my personal favourites!

Reggae riddims 2017

Chronixx – Capture Land (September 2014) Capture Land further cements Chronixx as a new reggae icon. This conscious anthem is part of the ‘ The Dread And Terrible Project‘ EP.

Real big tune! “A long time dem wah trick the rasta man, Like dem nuh know say man a real African” – Chronixx (Capture Land) 2. Popcaan – Fall In Love (April 2014) It’s always refreshing to hear the softer side to dancehall and ‘ Fall in Love‘ is one of those tunes that really resonates. “Hot skull mi name mi no silly tom, Bend over like Serena and win mi land” – Popcaan (Fall in Love) 3. Vybz Kartel – Miami Vice (May 2014) Even from behind bars, Vybz Kartel still plays a massive role in dancehall music and ‘ Miami Vice’ is yet another big tune to feature highly this year. “A Miami vice episode, we a star and a fi wi show” – Vybz Kartel (Miami Vice) 4.

Demarco – Good Book (June 2014) Demarco’s year has gone from strength to strength, and 2014 saw ‘ Good Book’ become one of his top tunes of all time so far Real badman anthem! “None a we naw look no sponsor from no man, From mi a Juvenile things straight govern.” – Demarco (Good Book) 5. I-Octane – Trendsetta (April 2014) I-Octane is fully setting the trends in the dancehall scene and ‘ Trendsetta’ is up there with the rest.

Party tun up! “Cyaa track mi, mi tracks dem hard fi keep, So mi roll out the Benz and park the Jeep.” – I-Octane (Trendsetta) 6. Spice ft Vybz Kartel – Conjual Visit (November 2014) From ‘ Ramping Shop‘ to ‘ Conjual Visit’, Spice’s chemistry with Vybz Kartel is fully loaded once again.

This anthem is taken from Spice’s ‘ So Mi Like It‘ EP. “Wooy baby mi a wine slow, And a wait fi the long thing go below.” – Spice (Conjual Visit) 7.

Popcaan – Love Yuh Bad (May 2014) Popcaan has had a massive year and ‘ Love Yuh Bad‘ featured on his, is one which helps redefine the sound of dancehall. “Baby you are my love for life, My queen, my wife, my barbie doll.” – Popcaan (Love Yuh Bad) 8. Kranium – Nobody Has to Know Although the video for Kranium’s ‘ Nobdy Has to Know ‘ was technically released in 2013, it was 2014 which saw the big tune shot. Now signed to Atlantic Records, we can expect big things from the New York based Jamaican artiste in 2015 Contagious tune!

“When yo feel the length a the broom, Transform like Tarzan” – Kranium (Noboday Has to Know) 9. Vybz Kartel – Anything Love Can Do (September 2014) I fell in love with this tune the moment I heard it – said to be dedicated to Vybz Kartel’s wife,’ Anything Love Can Do’ is as romantic, as it is poetic. Love tune of the year! “I love you, you love me too, There isn’t anything love cant do” – Vybz Kartel (Anything Love Can Do) 10. Mavado – Bend Ova (August 2014) Mavado puts the full sexiness in ‘ Bend Ova‘, this tune is a perfect choice for those seductive and sensual moments.

Straight sexiness! Mi seh gyal when you in a draws and bra that a my time, This yah black bwoy sneak in a your yard in a night time” – Mavado (Bend Ova) 11. Vybz Kartel – Without Money (June 2014) Since Vybz Kartel’s incarceration, many of his songs have featured a love sentiment. ‘ Without Money,‘ again reminds us of how important real love is. The best metaphors of 2014 – straight!

Busy Signal – Gyal Yuh Good (May 2014) This year we were reminded of the old skool dancehall days, with a number of big tunes and ‘ Gyal Yuh Good‘, by Busy Signal was one of them anthems that gave us that vibe. Good good woman anthem! “Balance paw yo head kotch it up fi mi gyal, Hot and sexy walk out wid it gyal” – Busy Signal – Gyal Yuh Good 13.

Vybz Kartel – Louis V (January 2014) Towards the start of 2014, Vybz Kartel released a one of which was ‘ Louis V‘, which continues to be a big tune today. Lyrics & flow tun up – anthem! “The two a wi a cuddle together the night lock, But a Addy a the shepherd every gyal a my flock” – Vybz Kartel (Louis V) 14. Demarco – Bun Up Road (September 2014) Taken from the ‘Happy Hour’ riddim, ‘ Bun Up Road’ from Demarco can fully shell dung a dance just like ‘ Good Book,‘ that also made the list! Riddim & tune mawadd!

“Tell some likkle bwoy no bother ramp wid the team, Big up every ghetto youth every scheme.” – Demarco (Bun Up Road) 15. Queen Ifrica – Tyad A Da Sumn Ya (February 2014) Queen Ifrica’s hard hitting ‘ Tyad A Da Sumn‘ released early in 2014, is a militant conscious tune that really hits home. Powerful and political! “Pure pressure on the poor, all over, load everything until we fall over” – Queen Ifrica (Tyad A Da Sumn Ya ) 16. I-Octane – Your Eyes (June 2014) The eyes are said to be the gateway to someones soul and I-Octane captures this sentiment beautifully in this melodic dancehall anthem. “Finger nail left scratch in a mi back, Size ten foot mi put that in a the sock, Shi a grab on pon the nat in a mi lock.” – I-Octane (Your Eyes) 17. Ishawna – Restraining Order (October 2014) Ishawna’s year of t led her career to evolve with a number of hits under her belt including ‘ Restraining Order‘, which was a big hit for the songstress in 2014.

Comeback tune! “Cyaa stress mi out till mi maga, Like floppy mi no need the drama.” – Ishawna (Restraining Order) 18. Beenie Man – Million Gal (November 2014) As one of dancehall’s biggest stars, Beenie Man is no stranger to hits. Million Gal’s boasty and catchy lyrics makes this a hot tune from the girl dem sugar. Gallis anthem! “Cause mi a big, big, gyallis from mi small, Tek weh a bwoy gyal left him a bawl.” – Beenie Man (Million Gal) 19. Kalado – Pree Money & Gyal / Pay Dem Nuh Mind (January 2014) Kalado kicked off the year with a double video release which are both big favourites.

Dancehall Reggae

This is a two in one from the rising ANG star. Double shellinz! “Sit inna mi name like a chair, Dem things mi no care” – Kalado (Pay Dem Nuh Mind) 20. Twin of Twins – Tessanne Tell Dem (January 2014) Twin of Twins have a unique way of combining humour with serious issues and ‘ Tessanne Tell Dem’ is a clever example of how they combine the two. “Tessanne if a remedy dem waan find, tell dem nah miss next time, look inna di mirror dem si crime, like how dem look pon dem watch and si time.” – Twin of Twins (Tell Dem) You would have noticed from this blog post, that Vybz Kartel featured heavily. Although, the deejay has had a rough year with his; musically, Kartel has continued to be a strong artiste within Jamaican dancehall / bashment. Also check out for 2015.

Words by Faction Sound Crew RVSSIAN photo by Martei Korley After counting down the best, and, we head into Week 2 of our look back at 2014 with a rundown of all the year’s necessary dancehall riddims. This year, we’ve enlisted the multi-regional —encompassing Vancouver’s DJ Arems, NYC’s DJ Tanner, Miami’s Iron Lyon and our own Deejay Theory out of San Francisco—to give us their field reports, and personal favorites. These riddims got nuff forwards this year, and also helped birth some of the years most successful singles as well.
